Background of the Study
Women’s empowerment is a critical aspect of social and economic development, and media plays a pivotal role in raising awareness and promoting initiatives aimed at improving the status of women. In Kaltungo LGA, Gombe State, various government and non-governmental organizations have launched programs aimed at empowering women, particularly in rural areas. These initiatives include skills development, access to education, healthcare, and financial inclusion. Journalism, especially through local media, serves as a bridge between these initiatives and the communities they seek to benefit. The role of journalists in reporting on women’s empowerment programs is essential for informing the public about these opportunities and fostering societal change (Binta & Usman, 2024). This study aims to explore the role of journalistic coverage in promoting women’s empowerment in Kaltungo LGA, examining how media coverage influences the success of these programs and the level of public awareness.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the growing number of women’s empowerment initiatives in Kaltungo LGA, there is limited research on the extent to which media coverage, particularly journalistic reporting, affects public awareness and participation in these programs. While some initiatives may be well-publicized, many women in rural areas may still be unaware of the opportunities available to them due to insufficient media coverage. Moreover, the effectiveness of journalistic reporting in challenging stereotypes and societal barriers that limit women’s empowerment remains unclear. This study seeks to address these gaps by examining how journalistic coverage of women’s empowerment initiatives influences public perception and engagement in Kaltungo LGA.
